Desmontaje del TVIX - Disassembly of the TVIX

TANTO LA IDEA ORIGINAL DE LA REPARACIÓN COMO ESTA TRADUCCIÓN HAN SIDO REALIZADAS POR NUESTRO AMIGO OGI. YO SOLO HE CONTINUADO SU TRABAJO.

THE ORIGINAL IDEA OF THIS REPAIR AND THIS TRANSLATION HAVE BEEN PERFORMED BY OUR FRIEND OGI. I HAVE JUST CONTINUED HIS WORK.
Empezamos
To do this just follow these simple instructions .... Let´s get started
These are the "special" tools required to open the TVIX: A Philips screwdriver, tweezers and a spatula, the bigger the better, in order not leave marks and not "lose the guarantee", you can also use a credit card. I did not want to remove the protective plastic just in case I had to return the unit, so if any photo is not very clear I hope you are comprehensive with me.

Continuamos : Let´s continue:

First remove the cover to access the hard disk compartment and subsequently to all components.

Remove the power and data connections of the hard drive. The data cable is red and the other one is the power connector.
Pressing the release button, gently remove the hard drive by pulling by the provided lever.

Remove the screw shown of the image before any other. I remark this because it is very important that this screw is removed, since it is the key to unlock the front and continue. Then remove the other one.

Look carefully at the picture: Insert the edge of the spatula into the lower case and push gently until it is released , and leave it as is on picture without removal. Turn the unit upside-down.

Now insert the spatula into the top case the same way, pull gently until it is released. Always smoothly. Comes out very easy.

As both covers are already released, the lower and the top, we just have to release the two latches, which are not visible, but are in the end that corresponds to the VFD. To release slide VERY! gently in the direction of the image and it is out.

Bueno, ya hemos llegado hasta aquí ¡Increible! ¿no?

Well, here we are already. Incredible! Huh? ; Yes that is what it seemed to me. We have removed the most complicated part. Now you must be very carefully with this ribbon, it can be removed either from the VFD or from the mother board, but I recommend doing so from the mobo. Now I explain myself.

Remove the lower shell, without further explanation. Oh by the way! It is called lower shell because in the normal position it will be in the bottom. Do not laught! Just in case someone missed that chapter of Sesame Street.

Now remove the four screws on the casing. This case holds the hard drive on the upper side, and the the power supply on the lower side. All the way back my dog in his favourite corner. No secrets here.

Now. Here you can see the connector that powers the mobo. This connector is a bit tricky and hard to remove. Press the release tab on the connector with one hand and pull with the other, applying pressure in the spot I point . Do not pull the cables!

Mucho cuidadito.

Now with the tweezers, pull a little both clips at the ends of the connector to release the pressure of the ribbon.Do not pull very hard so it does not come out completely.

Once released the pressure of the ribbon, we can remove it with tweezers with a very slight pressure to avoid damaging the ribbon wires.

We have removed almost everything so far. The bottom board or mobo is very easy to remove, just remove the four black screws that hold the external connections panel on the back of the TVIX and the fan plug. Once done, we have the case completely empty.

Preparación de la Carcasa - Preparation of the casing

ANALISIS DEL PROBLEMA - ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM

When you buy the TVIX it works well during the first 80-100 hours, always working to 1080p for about two or three months or so. After this time, with 50-80 minutes of operation, it begins to deform the image until it ends up with a black screen, or it hangs up. This time is narrowing gradually until the processor failures.

The problem is a flaw in the conception, design and location of the elements and the power supply. In the V1 of the product, the processor came without a heatsink, developed for lighter files, but processing files larger than 8Gb it got too hot and eventually damaged the processor. In the V2 version, dvico has "solved" the problem by sticking a "white" aluminum heatsink on the chip with thermal paste. But as the heat continues to exist because it can not get out in any way, the processor is still warming up and the first days it works well, but soon the thermal paste is degraded by the action of the heat, going back to the problem of V1 version.

Furthermore, the original fan, not only has it very little power, but it is not playing its role because it only partially extracts air from the hard drive, and it is so close to it, that it is useless. The manufacturer should solve this problem by redesigning the printed circuit board of the power supply, leaving space to place a micro fan to a heatsink mounted on the chip, like graphics cards. It would be the best solution.

When the unit is completely disassembled you can see that it consists of two modules: A power supply and a mother board, placed in such a way that there is only 1.5 mm gap between the power supply heatsink and the processor heatsink, amazing. The temperatures reached until the failure can see it in the last chapter of the Blog
.

Using the space for the DTV tuner (which does not interfere) I placed a fan of speed range 1,500 to 5,000 rpm. You can increase the speed to achieve lower temperatures, but also more noise. I have chosed, after several tests, a Sunon 40x40x10 5,500 rpm magnetic levitation/suspension (no friction) which gives greater durability and less noise. The noise is produced by the air flow (not the fan) personally, It does not bother me because I watch 1080p movies in 5.1 with a loud level. Someone who would bothers the noise, just use a fan with lower speed. There is plenty options in the market. The key is that there must be a proper ventilation. We also use the original fan reversing it to help thowing in fresh air.

Now we're going to need some tools a little more precise. I have them for my work, but with a little file, a small drill, a soldering iron, tin, an inexpensive multimeter and an old PC to get some component is enough.

Close the case and mark a circle Ø40mm with a compass. Make the hole for the fan keeping in mind that it must not match with any electronic component on the mobo, but should be very close to it (1mm), just above the three small black coils, so that almost all the fan is at the top, getting more air flow. This hole is made with a circular saw 40mm
Now in the craddle of the power supply in the end, remove the stopper of the hard drive, and we saw a small rectangle to the exact shape of the fan, so that the craddle will support both the HD and the fan.

Now make some vertical slots as an outlet for the hot air. I have made these slots by hand with a milling cutter and a Dremel (small drill machine), so they are not perfect. It is essential to make these slots if you want to make a good fix. Later I will explain why.

This is how the TVIX top case would look like once finished. On one side we have the new fan space. On the opposite side the ventilation slots and also if you look carefully I have added a power switch just below the power plug, so that it is easier to make the wiring. (This switch is from a PC power supply). Make a drill and with a small file make a square the same size of the switch and there you go.

The empty box with the hole for the fan and the hot air extraction slots.

Here we have the fan in place. If the job has been well done there is no need to use any screws, as it fits perfectly and does not move, but if you want you can use a droplet of silicone instead of both upper screws or in the HD craddle . The fan must be in position "blow air inwards" rather than extraction.

Here we have the TVIX assembled and you can see the extraction grid. It is not perfect but the next one I make for any friend for sure will look better. I advise not to be impatient because the rush to finish quickly pays with mistakes. Remember that we only have one chance, you have to think twice or three times before putting the drill in.

In this picture we can see a recreation of how the air leaves the fan and goes right through the space where the SIGMA will be once assembled. This has been tested and the air is real and one hundred percent effective. Also flows between the aluminum plate and SIGMA.

In this picture we also see a recreation of the air extraction thru the slots

If the TVIX is new YOU DO NOT have to do this, but if it has been used for more than 70-100 hours is essential to do so, I recommend it because the thermal glue paste that sticks the heatsink to the chip is already damaged by the action of excess temperature. If you do not do it , the problem is reduced but not resolved. I've done several tests. This operation is not complicated but it is delicate. Take the aluminum heatsink shown in the image with twofingers and start making short turns left and right increasing length (be patient) until it is out of the chip.

This is what you need to stick the aluminum plate on the chip. Once removed the heatsink, clean both the chip and the heatsink with alcohol (use a small scourer if it is very hard). Then use just a little of this mixture over the chip, taking care not to overflow, because it is a conductor and could join the pins of the chip creating a shortcircuit. Best practice is to do one or two tests on something as big as the chip to achieve the desired amount, which covers the chip but does not overflow. After placing the exact amount of paste in the center of the chip, press hard until it is joint.

This is what we need to install the fan connector: A power supply switch, a male socket and cable with a female connector for the fan. I got all these elements from an old PC.

Now we are going to mark the 1 mm holes for the socket (drill the holes from this side)

Now mark the other side (markin one side only is enough), this mark is to make sure that the socket does not interfere with any component.

Now place the socket and weld it. This socket is the best way I've found a to connect the new fan. It is connected directly to the power supply inlet, with all the intensity in milliamps required for more than one watt, without danger to the mainboard or the power supply. This is a direct connection, so the fan is always running, as the power supply is always on even if the TVIX is off. Latter we will install a main switch to be safer.

This is the back side of the plate where I welded the socket shown in the previous photo. We already have the fan socket as if it came mounted from factory.

Aquí vemos el proceso terminado. Como veis nada complicado. Aunque todo se puede mejorar

Here we see the process completed. As you can see it is not complicated. Although everything can be improved

If you find this complicated, you can also take the power from the hard drive connector. It is not the most professional way, but it is the most simple way, always the fan is powered with 12 volts and has a power below 1 watt, in order not to overload the circuit. The black and yellow wires are 12 volts.

If you do not want to splice the wires to make it more aesthetic, the wires of the fan can be welded in the other side keeping in mind that 12 volts are red and black.

The TVIX comes without a main switch, so the power supply is always on and if we have installed the socket, the fan is going to be always turning. What I have done to prevent this, is to place this main switch. The main power socket is welded to the circuit board. What we do is cut one of the circuits with a knife, and solder a wire to each piece of track as in the photo below.

To place the switch first we need to make a cut in the case of the power supply as shown in the picture so we can pass the wires.

After that with a knife cut a piece of printed circuit board as in the photo, to interrupt the circuit.

Then solder two wires as in the photo.

Pass them through the square hole we made in the casing.

Weld them to the switch that we had previously placed.

Ya lo tenemos montado . Así quedaría con el disco duro montado. No molesta nada.

We have it assemblied. This is how it would look like with the hard drive installed. It does not interfere with anything.

Temperaturas (comprobación) - Temperature (check)

IMPORTANTE
The temperature of the TVIX can be monitorized directly with the firmware, following these steps: Press MENU key of the remote and when the icons appear, select the VIDEO icon after pressing the "function" key (the one with the moon). The copy symbol and others will show up. Now type 8367 in the remote and the temperature should be visible now in the upper right corner. After 45 minutes just with the unit switched ON ,without watching anything, the temperature will be around 60ºC.
Fot these tests I am going to use a especific temp meter, and this way I will compare the effectiveness of my test and of the inner sensor of the TVIX.
Now let´s start with the tests. I have connected the temperature probe as seen in the image and with the entire TVIX assembled. The first test as it comes the TVIX, the second with the fan in extraction mode and the third with the fan blowing air inwards. I have also done some testing with the aluminum heatsink with the original thermal paste glue and the new paste. So, all possible tests. (just to assembly and dissasembly, a big job, huh?).

===================================================
Now let's check the temperature of a new unit used for 4 months and about 100 movies always 1080p (maximum performance Chip). Compare the chart with the pictures to make sure it is real. We can check in the first picture that after 16 minutes we are already operating at 53 ° C and rises gradually to 60 º C after 54 minutes, at this point the temperature stabilizes and rises very slowly until you no longer see the TVIX screen.
Based on the architecture of a similar processor and knowing that the maximum temperature at which the risk of severe burns is around 90 ° if we measure inside the integration area (inside the chip). If the measurement takes place outside of the chip, the maximum temperature will be about 70 º (just above the chip). But as in this case we measured just above the aluminum heatsink through the thermal paste and the chip housing, the maximum temperature that it can support up to the melt point of the junction, will be something over 60 º C. Conclusion: The chip is subjected to extreme working conditions, and if we do not lower the temperature in any way, it will get burned. Even knowing that the heatsink is not effective, it is impossible to change it due to the lack of space. So the purpose of this study focuses exclusively on the extraction of air, so I welcome any suggestion that may help to improve this humble contribution. Next I will do the checks on a repaired unit.

===================================================
We can immediately notice that the temperature is much more stable. We started to measure after 41 minutes that is the time it took to reach that temperature and ended after 75 minutes and found that the temperature has remained fairly stable up to 47.1 º C and remains there even after 4 hours. This is how it should be. In the chart you can see the green line and after 46 º C. is stable, and the opposite, the red line always tends to rise.

ANEXO - ANNEX
===================================================
In several forums I was told that there are users who have no problems after more than one year. Theys say these devices get hot and this is how it should be. In this regard, I responded as follows, just to not repeat myself again and again:
In this blog I try to focus exclusively on testing and to evaluate the temperature of the microprocessor with given variables: ambient temperature, TVIX location and power consumption . With these parameters we can apply the following equality or thermal Ohm's law which states: Tj - Ta = P * Rth.
Where:
Tj = the maximum temperature in the area of integration (Junction).
Ta = (ambient temperature).
P = power consumption (not the same with 1080P rips).
Rth = total thermal resistance between the union and the ambient air.

If anything in this equation changes, IT DOES NOT WORK! Or it is not working as it should be, at least this is what the thermal ohm law says, which is precisely what DVICO missed manufacturing this product, but yes, they sell it as if it complied. From now on we can speak more accurately, always in terms of temperature and location of the chip, because I want you to know that it is obvious that I have not modified my TVIX because I was bored.
It is also true, as suggested in different forums, and it must be said, that before modifying the TVIX, you have to be SURE that the problem of the TVIX is not related to a firmware update or any other fault not related to the temperature.
It is also true, as I suggest in different forums, and it must be said that before scrapping the TVIX and be sure that there are quite sure that the problem manifests the TVIX when the fault does not correspond to the firmware update or any other damage that does not correspond with the temperature.
HACER ESTE BLOG COMO OS PODEIS IMAGINAR ME HA COSTADO UN TRABAJO Y ME GUSTARÍA SABER QUE HA SERVIDO PARA ALGO, POR LO QUE OS AGRADEZCO QUE PONGAIS ALGÚN COMENTARIO , AUNQUE SOLO SEA GRACIAS, MUCHAS GRACIAS .
WRITING THIS BLOG as You can imagine was a big job and I would like to know if it was useful to someone, so I appreciate if you write ANY COMMENT, even if it is just a simple “thank you”.
